The White House is doubling down on its support for the National Cyber Security Alliance’s “Lock Down Your Login” campaign.

It first announced its support at the end of last month, when a White House statement linked it to the President’s Cybersecurity National Action Plan. Lock Down Your Login dovetails with the executive government’s aims in its promotion of stronger online account security for users. The campaign now has the support of over 35 companies and NGOs, including Yubico, the FIDO Alliance, Google, Facebook, and Intel.

In a new statement, the White House asserted that 73 percent of Americans connect online on a daily basis, while about 20 percent are constantly connected, and suggested that along with these trends, the threat of digital identity theft and other digital attacks has also become more of a concern; as such, better security practices and solutions are called for. The statement also proclaimed that 78 percent of Americans agree that “government, industry and other stakeholders should work to find new ways of securing accounts beyond the password.”

That work is certainly being done, but efforts to raise user awareness are also important. Lock Down Your Login is part of a larger such effort called STOP. THINK. CONNECT., which aims to raise awareness about digital security more generally.
