After a lengthy parade of rumor and speculation, in-display fingerprint sensor technology finally arrived in commercial smartphones last year. It came in the wake of Apple’s launch of its Face ID facial recognition system on the iPhone X, which first marked Apple’s definitive departure away from fingerprint scanning and prompted many mobile industry observers to wonder if facial recognition would be the future.

Increasingly, though, it looks like there’s room for both. Apple is sticking with Face ID and its rivals are working on copycat systems, but other smartphone makers and components suppliers are nevertheless persisting in their pursuit of in-display fingerprint scanning technologies. Here are some of the latest important signs that this will continue to be an important technology through 2019:
